Hello!

Mandy, one of our morning receptionists, recently mentioned the large number of inquiries that she receives about flea/tick/ and heartworm preventives. She thought it would be a good idea if I were to summarize the most popular items on the market for our best clients (that's you!).

There are so many products on the market now that it is hard to keep track of them all..

I hope this is useful to you.

* Advantage:

A topical spot on that provides the best protection of all available products against fleas. Both canine and feline forms are available. No tick protection.

* Frontline:

Another topical spot on product for dogs and cats that provides very good control for fleas and excellent control against ticks.

* Revolution:

Yet another topical spot on product that provides good control for fleas and average control of ticks. Revolution also provides excellent control of heartworms, some common intestinal worms , and ear mites. Canine and Feline forms available.

* Heartgard:

A monthly heartworm preventive in chewable and non chewable pill form. Also provides protection against some common intestinal worms.

* Filaribits:

A daily chewable heartworm preventive that also provides protection against some common intestinal worms.

* Frontline spray:

A monthly spray that provides excellent flea and tick protection. Good barrier (repellent) action.

* Preventic collar:

A tick collar that provides the best tick protection possible. Very good if you live in an area known to have heavy tick populations. Can be used in combination with Revolution if added tick protection is necessary. Good barrier (repellent) action.

**Important note:

While spot on products do a nice job at killing fleas and ticks, they do not provide any repellent action. This means that your pet still may pick up fleas or ticks which will live on the coat (and can be transported into the home) for a period of time before being killed.

If you are using a spot on product and still having problems with your pet picking up fleas or ticks, Consider adding a preventic collar or changing to Frontline spray.

Best regards,
Dr. Pennington
